Cosmetology schools across Kansas are reporting surging enrollment, as students are drawn to the flexibility, creativity, and entrepreneurial potential of careers in hair, skin, and nail care.
Instructors say interest has grown among people seeking alternatives to four-year degrees, attracted by the prospect of building a clientele, renting a booth, or eventually owning a salon. The programs combine classroom instruction with hands-on training and prepare students for state licensing exams.
"This is a career you can take anywhere and make your own," a school director in Wichita said. Graduates find work in salons, spas, and increasingly in specialized fields like lash artistry and medical aesthetics.
Educators caution that success in the industry requires business savvy as much as technical skill, and many programs now include instruction in marketing and client management.
