Additive manufacturing, better known as 3D printing, is moving from the prototyping bench to the production floor in Wichita's aerospace shops, enabling engineers to build lighter, more complex parts than traditional methods allow.
The technology builds components layer by layer from metal or polymer, allowing intricate geometries that would be impossible or wildly expensive to machine. Manufacturers use it to consolidate multiple parts into one, cutting weight and assembly time, a valuable advantage in aircraft.
"We can now make parts that we simply could not make before," an engineer said. Qualifying printed parts for use in aircraft, however, requires rigorous testing and certification.
Industry watchers say additive manufacturing will not replace traditional machining but will increasingly complement it, opening new design possibilities for the region's aerospace sector.
