Topeka Moves to Protect a Historic Black Business District

The Topeka City Council advanced a proposal this week to formally designate a historic district honoring a stretch of the city that for generations served as the heart of Black commercial and cultural life in the capital.

The designation would offer preservation protections and make property owners eligible for restoration incentives. Historians say the area, home to shops, theaters, and churches, played a central role in the city's history, including the civil rights era for which Topeka is nationally known.

"This is about making sure the next generation can stand on the same sidewalks and understand what happened here," a member of the preservation commission said. Community groups have spent years documenting the district's buildings and gathering oral histories.

A final vote is expected later this year following additional public hearings.
