Topeka Weighs $2.63 Million Plan for Property Cleanup and Encampments

The Public Health and Safety Committee took up the 2026 spending plan, which would fund the abatement of dangerous and neglected properties along with the clearing of encampments on public land. City leaders have described the work as a balance between neighborhood upkeep and connecting people experiencing homelessness with services.

Advocates for the homeless have urged the city to pair enforcement with expanded shelter and housing options, arguing that cleanups alone do not resolve the underlying shortage of affordable places to live. City officials say they are coordinating outreach ahead of any encampment removals.

In a related move, federal housing officials agreed to share inspection reports with the City of Topeka to strengthen oversight of subsidized housing, part of the same push to improve living conditions across the capital.
