Researchers in Kansas are exploring a tantalizing possibility: linking the state's two signature industries by producing sustainable aviation fuel from the crops and agricultural residues that blanket its fields.
Sustainable aviation fuel, made from sources like plant oils, waste, and crop residues, can substantially reduce the carbon footprint of flying. For a state that both grows abundant biomass and builds aircraft, the concept holds obvious appeal, potentially creating markets for farmers and greener fuel for the aviation industry.
"Kansas grows the feedstock and builds the airplanes. The fuel in between is a natural fit," a university researcher said. Commercial production at scale, however, remains costly and technically challenging.
Backers say policy support and continued research could eventually turn the idea into an industry, though significant hurdles remain before farm-grown jet fuel becomes commonplace.
