Johnson County Modernizes Election Equipment Ahead of 2026 Cycle

Election officials in Johnson County, the most populous in Kansas, have installed updated tabulation equipment and expanded the number of early voting locations ahead of the 2026 election cycle.

The upgrades, approved by county commissioners, include new ballot scanners with paper audit trails and additional drop-box locations. Officials emphasized that the changes are aimed at speeding up results reporting while preserving verifiable paper records.

"Voters should be able to trust both that their ballot counts and that the count can be checked," the county election commissioner said. Poll workers will undergo additional training on the new machines over the summer.

The county has seen steady population growth, and officials said the expanded capacity is meant to prevent the long lines that occasionally formed in past high-turnout elections.
