State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson to Get Major Infrastructure Overhaul
The Kansas State Fair board approved upgrades to aging water, electrical, and barn facilities at the Hutchinson fairgrounds ahead of the September event.
The board that oversees the Kansas State Fair has approved a package of infrastructure upgrades at the Hutchinson fairgrounds, addressing aging water lines, electrical systems, and livestock barns that officials say are overdue for replacement.
The work, funded through a combination of state appropriations and fair revenue, is scheduled to take place over two off-seasons to avoid disrupting the September fair, which draws hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. Some of the barns date to the early 20th century.
"You want visitors thinking about the butter sculpture and the grandstand show, not about whether the lights are going to hold," a fair official said. Exhibitors have long complained about overloaded electrical service during peak days.
The fair remains one of the largest annual gatherings in the state and a significant economic driver for Reno County.
