Garden City, long one of the most diverse communities in Kansas, has opened a welcome center that consolidates language classes, job placement, and family services under one roof for the immigrant workers who staff the region's meatpacking industry.
The southwestern Kansas city has for decades drawn workers from around the world, and residents there speak dozens of languages. Local leaders say the center is meant to help newcomers navigate everything from school enrollment to health care.
"Our economy runs on these workers, and it is in everyone's interest that families can put down roots," the center's director said. The facility is funded by a mix of city support, employer contributions, and philanthropic grants.
Organizers said early demand for English classes has been strong, with waiting lists forming within days of opening.
