The vast cattle feedlots of western Kansas, which finish millions of animals for market each year, are adopting new tools to monitor animal health, fine-tune feed rations, and shrink their environmental footprint.
Feedlots are a defining feature of the Kansas cattle economy, concentrating animals for the final months before processing. Operators are increasingly using sensors, cameras, and data systems to spot sick animals early and to tailor feed for efficiency, which improves both welfare and the bottom line.
"A healthy animal that gains well is good for everyone, including the animal," a feedlot nutritionist said. Managing manure, dust, and odor remains a constant challenge, and operators are investing in mitigation.
The efficiency of Kansas feedlots is a major reason the state ranks among the top in cattle on feed, a status that ripples through the entire regional economy.
