As the Ogallala Aquifer continues its long decline, Kansas farmers are turning to smarter irrigation technology to squeeze more crop from every drop of water they pump.

Soil moisture probes, weather-based scheduling, and variable-rate center pivots that adjust application across a field are helping growers apply water more precisely. In the irrigated districts of western Kansas, where the aquifer waters corn and other thirsty crops, even small efficiency gains add up across thousands of acres.

"We cannot make it rain, but we can make sure we are not wasting a single gallon," a farmer near the aquifer said. Local groundwater management districts have set voluntary and, in some areas, mandatory conservation targets.

Experts stress that technology can slow the aquifer's decline but not reverse it, and that harder choices about total water use still lie ahead.
