A growing crop of craft breweries and distilleries is adding taprooms and boosting demand for Kansas-grown grain.
Kansas craft breweries and distilleries are expanding, opening new taprooms and, in the process, creating fresh demand for grain grown in the state's own fields.
The industry, once constrained by restrictive laws, has grown steadily as regulations eased and consumer interest in local products deepened. Some producers now market the Kansas origin of their wheat, corn, and sorghum as a selling point, forging direct relationships with nearby farmers.
"There is something powerful about a beer or a whiskey that tells a Kansas story from the field to the glass," one brewery owner said. The taprooms have also become community gathering spots, particularly in smaller towns.
Industry advocates say further modernization of alcohol laws would help the sector grow, while cautioning that competition is fierce.
