Kansas Universities Drive Research to Future-Proof Farming

Agricultural researchers at Kansas universities are working to future-proof the state's most important industry, developing drought-tolerant crop varieties, improved livestock genetics, and new tools to keep farming viable in a changing climate.

The state's land-grant research enterprise has long been a partner to Kansas farmers, and its work has taken on new urgency as producers face declining groundwater and more erratic weather. Breeders are racing to develop wheat and sorghum that yield with less water, while animal scientists study efficiency and disease resistance.

"Our job is to give farmers options for a future that will not look like the past," a university researcher said. Much of the work is done in close collaboration with producers on real fields.

Funding pressures are a persistent concern, and administrators warn that sustained investment is needed to keep the research pipeline flowing.
