Adaptive Sports Programs Expand Access Across Kansas
Organizations across Kansas are growing adaptive sports opportunities for athletes with disabilities.
Organizations across Kansas are expanding adaptive sports programs, creating opportunities for athletes with disabilities to compete in wheelchair basketball, track, and a growing range of other sports.
The programs, run by nonprofits, universities, and community groups, provide specialized equipment, coaching, and competition. Advocates say sports offer the same benefits, camaraderie, fitness, and confidence, to all athletes, and that access has historically been lacking.
"Every athlete deserves the chance to compete, and we are working to make that real," a program organizer said. Participation has grown as awareness and funding have increased.
Supporters are pushing for more facilities and school-based opportunities, arguing that adaptive sports belong alongside traditional athletics as a core part of community life in Kansas.
